There are several styles of crown molding that come in four types of material. The most popular material is MDF (medium density fiber) that looks as good as the more expensive plaster molding that was once the popular form of crown molding. With limited shrinkage, ready receptiveness to paint, and available in many styles, MDF is your best bet for a gorgeous finished application. Plaster crown molding is available and offers more styles, a more custom finish and does react to humidity or other influences that cause warping, swelling or shrinkage. Plaster is more expensive than MDF but usually not worth the increased cost. Those that do choose plaster are likely looking for more customization in the finished look. Rubber molding is available and is usually used for areas requiring bending such as rotundas, circular ceiling insets and so on. We try and use this as little as possible as it tends to be quite a bit more expensive. When we do use it, rubber molding is usually the only option to get a great look on curves.
